This movie has it all. It covers an extensive array of topics from family values, love, friendship, loyalty, to racism, gang warfare and education to name but a few. Boyz in the hood is definitely not light entertainment, rather it makes you analyze your life and the way you perceive others to live. Enlighten yourself!
Set in South Central Los Angeles this movie takes us through the lives of three African American children. Tre played by (Cuba Gooding Jr) the legendary Ice Cube is cast as Doughboy and finally, Ricky played by (Morris Chestnut).
Having spent time together as children Tre goes to live with his mother in Up Town where the lifestyle is very different, hardly any crime, people are civil to each other, a 'normal' environment for most of us. On becoming a teenager Reva, (Angela Bassett) decides that she can't teach her son how to be a "real man" so makes the decision to send him back to his father (Laurence Fishburne) who can.
Upon returning to the Hood, Tre is shocked by the lifestyle there. Woken by intruders, police helicopters overhead and violence. His father is very much a disciplinarian and is quite aware of the neighbourhood antics. Educating the African Americans is a big part of Tre's fathers life. I mean ask yourself "why is there a drugstore on every corner of the ghetto?"
His good friend Ricky has kept himself on the straight and narrow, becoming a school football player studying for his SAT which would provide him with a college scholarship. Doughboy on the other hand has chosen the path of a gangsta drug dealer. Pretty ironic how one split reaction can pave their very different lives.
An incident occurs where these close friends have to make a decision that will effect their lives forever. How far would you go for someone you loved? Would you think with your head or your heart? So many emotions, the decision would be difficult.
You will laugh, you will cry (well I did) you will hopefully think twice about judging others and the life they lead, everyone's circumstances are different.
Time to dance y'all, tee hee. Accompanied by a kick a** soundtrack from artists such as Ice Cube (hell yeah),The Five Stairsteps, Run D.M.C. plus many others. The album reached No 1 on the R&B chart claiming gold from the RIAA.
