Crazy Ex-Girlfriend show review

I really like comedies. This genre, in my opinion, is the hardest to write, act and make feel fresh. There're tons of good comedies out there, of course (like my all-time favorite shows Community and Louie or a recent magnificent discovery Broad City), and I'm happy to announce that there's a nice addition to the list.

In the series we follow Rebecca, a miserable woman from New York with a successful career, money, and no life outside of her work. One day she runs into her high school love Josh who lives in a small town in California and decides to give up her old life and start anew in that town. Of course, what follows is a hilarious string of events over 18 40-minute episodes filled with comedy, self-discovery and drama.

What I really like about this show is that all the main characters go through an arc of their own and change. The show addresses many issues about relationships between friends and lovers and even takes an unusual spin on a classic love triangle. The characters are, of course, what makes the show. The peculiar thing you will see is that they at first appear as stereotypes (a shallow heart-throb, a bitchy girlfriend, a silly boss), but as the show progresses they start to really show the depth of each character and you don't even root for the main heroine, because you see how other characters are each right in their own way.

I guess my description makes it sound like some kind of character-driven drama but make no mistake: the show is hilarious. Sure, some jokes fall flat but most of the time I found myself at least cracking a smile.

Of course, it would be a disservice to the show to not mention the songs. Ah, the songs! Each episode features two or three original songs tied to the events of the episode but having exclusively entertainment value. You can actually watch a lot of them on YouTube, they are a good way to get into the show's light mood.

So, if you're looking for a funny comedy with well-developed characters and don't mind sticking around for some filler (it's eighteen 40-minute episodes. Yes, there's filler) - then Crazy Ex-Girlfriend show is definitely worth a shot.
