(Photo not found) 'Gippi' is an adorable film about awkward adolescence,first crushes, school rivalry, weight issues and Shammi Kapoor classics. The film is more than just a fun watch and will take adults down memory lane while connecting with teenagers at the same time. What's it about? Gurpreet Kaur aka Gippi (Riya Vij) is a 14-year-old student at St. Mary s School in Shimla, where her only friend is Anchal (Doorva Tripathi). While discovering herself physically and emotionally, Gippi is fortunate to have the support of her family that consists of younger brother Booboo (Arbaz Kadwani) and her loving mother Pappi (Divya Dutta). When the mature (she believes she is for her age) Gippi starts fancying a high school boy Arjun (Taaha Shah) things start to change. To show the obnoxious Miss Perfect Shamira Chauhan (Jayati Modi) that she too has a boyfriend, Gippi invites Arjun to Shamira s party. Keeping the staple Dharma Productions angle intact, a competitionbetween the polished Miss Perfect against the very flawed Miss Butterfingers is inevitable and is fun to watch. The film s story is predictable, but its reel time is livelyenough to make you overlook a few stereotypical characters. The portrayal of relationships between friends and with parents isn t sugar-coated which makes it easy to relate to. Gippi s physical and emotional problems associated with puberty get the most number of grins. (Photo not found) Riya Vij slips perfectly into the shoes of Gippi. She notonly looks but ably acts the part of a klutzy, lovable teenager, generating a positive vibe whenever she s on screen. Divya Dutta aces the mummy act and complements the young cast well. Arbaz Kadwani winsour hearts as the cute younger brother who helps his sister win the school elections. On the other hand, Taaha Shah is ignorable and Mrinal Shah, who plays Gippi s friend Kabir, doesn t leave much of an impact either. We thought the bitchy act did not come naturally to Jayati Modi and she tries too hard to play the snooty over-achiever. Doorva Tripathi, as the reliable friend, was one of our favourite characters in the film. Her sad expressions and lethargic attitude forthe most part of the film s length were spot on. With accidental chemistry experiments, passing chits between classes, getting embarrassed during lingerie shopping and mending broken hearts- the simple storyof Gippi is bound to touch your heart in more ways than one.
