Completely Unreliable Movie Reviews Vol 6

Welcome once again to my Completely Unreliable Movie Reviews series, where I do a pretty damn good job of reviewing films, even if I do say so myself. I was going to do this earlier in the month, but I lost all motivation when my whole article was erased by this damn new phone of mine. Irritating as hell, but I'm here now and ON WITH THE SHOW!

Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk is a film by Ang Lee about a young war hero who, while on a victory tour around the country, recalls the harsh realities of war. It holds themes of how war affects the soldiers as well as social injustice. While watching this, I somehow can't shake off the feeling that it's at times a US Army recruitment video, which is never a good thing to do. Otherwise, it's a good movie and there's a cameo in the film by a big franchise star that you would never expect (Hint: He is all about family)

Moonlight is a 2016 drama film which won the Best Picture Oscar at this year's Oscars as well as a few others. It's a story about a gay black man living in a bad Miami neighbourhood. It goes through three stages in his life, from a kid to his teen years to a man. It has some stellar performances all around and this is the type of film I would definitely watch a few more times. It made me tear up and feel for the main character, what he has to endure through his life. A worthy film in my opinion, but if drama isn't your cup of tea...then watch it anyway. Do it. Do it now.

The Guest... Well, this is an action film which has been on my PVR for more than a year and I've only just gotten to it and I must say I regret watching it sooner. It's about a soldier who heads to a fallen comrade's family to console them and ends up staying with them for a bit, but things start to go awry and the soldier is more than what he seems to be. I've fallen in love recently, not only for the brilliant turn by Dan Stevens as the soldier, but for the synth soundtrack and abrupt cuts. It makes for a visceral and entertaining film. If you haven't seen it, go see it now.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a 70's musical which is a story about a newly engaged couple whose car breaks down one stormy night and they head to a castle to seek help and instead, they become submerged in the reality of one Dr Frank-n-Furter, a transvestite scientist from transsexual Transylvania. This is a pure campy musical classic with a memorable cast and memorable music which I could sing over and over again (of course I can sing. I'm awesome). I can't believe it took me this long to see this and I got scolded at by friends for not seeing it sooner. The shame.... THE SHAME!

The Hollars is a drama film about a guy who works at a publisher, when his life is suddenly changed when he hears that his mother is in hospital because of a brain tumour. He goes back home to the small town, where he finds that his family all have issues of their own. Plainly put, the movie doesn't work for me. I have most definitely seen this movie in different variations and this is no different, although I have seen better (Elizabethtown, for one). Also, the director of this film also plays the main role and it's somewhat self-serving. I think he just wanted to do things that he could never do in movies before, like swing on a tire or shaving a woman's head. But anyway, if these kind of comedy dramas is your cup of tea, then by all means go watch it. It's... Average. Borderline.
