Soccer fans have spoken — by putting their foot in their mouth.
Footy McFooty Face is the leading contender for the name of the San Diego team vying for one of Major League Soccer’s expansion spot.
Votes for the name began pouring into a Facebook poll Friday morning, as the fourth and final round got under way.
Fans can choose one of 20 names and the final 10 will be submitted to MLS, which will have final approval.
In the third round, Footy earned nearly 2,550 votes over second runner-up San Diego Surf, which collected about 2,330.
Rounding out the top five contenders in round 3 were San Diego Football Club (SDFC), San Diego Bad Hombres and Mission San Diego FC.
The least popular names were San Diego Bolts and San Diego Chargers.
The poll is being conducted on SoccerCity SD’s Facebook page. The investor group is backed by former US national team star Landon Donovan.
The inspiration behind Footy was born out of an online contest to name a new research ship in the UK.
“Boaty McBoatface” ultimately won out — but in a snub to the people, British officials instead named the massive vessel the Royal Research Ship Sir David Attenborough, after the BBC journalist.
Officials relegated the Boaty McBoatface name to a yellow submarine that’s embarking on its first mission to study the Southern Ocean encircling Antarctica.
