Overview

Well, I got to admit that I haven't followed Formula 1 as avidly as I did, back in 2007, when Kimi 'The Iceman' Riakkonen stood on top after a thrilling season. It literally went to the last minute of the last race. I still remember it. Fantastic memories! So nailbiting was the end, that the Finn had to wait for Lewis Hamilton's position even after finishing the Brazilian Grand Prix first, to win the championship in his maiden season with Ferrari. That too, only by a point, with 2 drivers finishing a tied second behind him. Worth a mention is that he became one of the very few drivers to be crowned the champion in his first season with the Scuderia.

Now fast forward 5 years and we find ourselves in a similar position. Albeit this time, there are only 2 drivers with a realistic chance of winning the championship. Quite similarly to the '07 season, there's every possibility that it might go down to the wire. And even if you're not a regular, like I've been for some time now, the last few races are always exciting to see. And when it moves to the American continent for the last 2 races for a gripping finalé, you can expect edge of the seat action! Although, with a better car, Sebastian Vettel looks favourite to see through his lead, Fernando Alonso will try his very best to avoid the German winning his third world championship.

THE CIRCUIT
Those who witnessed the race, will agree what an absolute brilliance is the Yas Marina circuit. Such exquisitely is it built, that you can lose yourself in awe of it's architecture. It's a feast to the eyes. And the prospect of a twilight race amidst such extravaganza is mouth watering!

HOW DID THE RACE GO?
The race itself, completely complimented the beautiful circuit. There was high octane entertainment with crashes, some brilliant racing and the floodlit track. The DRS wing (although unfair to some extent) was again responsible for all the entertaining overtaking.
I personally back Ferrari as a result of my affection towards the franchise and both their drivers. And while the Spaniard has been claimed by many to be the better driver, Sebastian Vettel proved on this track that he is indeed a good driver. Starting the race from pit lane as a result of punishment due to fuel irregularities during qualification, the German drove his way upto a podium finish. Although, it must be said that luck played a big part along with some good work by his engineers, it was overall a pleasure to watch him drive. Fernando Alonso himself had a good race finishing 2nd after starting off 6th, and thus keeping hopes of a championship alive. But Kimi Riakkonen really stole the show with a fantastic finish. He used all his experience to hold on to his lead with a cool head. He became the first man since 1987 to grab a win under Lotus, after the legendary Brazilian Ayrton Senna.

Last 5 laps were thrilling with Alonso cutting Kimi's lead bit by bit with the Finn's car losing time due to wearing tyres. In the end, Alonso finished behind him only by 8 thousandths of a second.
Lewis Hamilton endured a bad day, with the driver having to pull off unluckily, after having led the race. Apart from that there were crashes galore, with the most notable being the one between Mercedes driver Niko Rosberg and HRT driver Narain Karthikeyan. And both had a very lucky escape, which otherwise could've been dangerous.

Well, I completely enjoyed the race. What are your thoughts? Who're you supporting? Discuss in the comments section.
