The Gunners would qualify for the Champions League if they beat the Magpies after consigning Wigan to defeat with a 4-1 win on Tuesday - a win that gave them the upper hand against close rivals Tottenham in the hunt for the top four. Wenger emphasised the importance of finishing well before delving into any transfer activity, while he also criticised the transfer debacles surrounding Robin van Persie, Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas in the previous summers. "Let's finish well and then we'll give ourselves a good potential chance to win the championship next season by doing well in the transfer market," the Arsenal boss told reporters. "Last summer and the year before were very difficult;last year we had the Robin van Persie case and beforethat it was Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri. We started pre-season, on camps, with every time a player being half-in or half-out and that is not the best way mentally to prepare." Wenger also spoke of the managerial switches between other Premier League clubs, suggesting that the arrival of new bosses could provide Gunners with the impetus to launch a challenge. "You can have a little advantage on some teams. If [Jose] Mourinho comes back it will not be a totally new experience but, yes, if [Manuel] Pellegrini comes it can be difficult in a new country," he continued."It's very difficult to predict how it will work."
