2019 SEA Games, or 2019 Southeast Asian Games, is the 30th edition of the Southeast Asian Games. It will be hosted by Philippines from November 30 to December 11, 2019, and will be the country's 4th time hosting the biennial regional multi-sport event since the 1981, 1991 and 2005 editions. Competition venues spread in 23 cities across the country, divided into 4 clusters, all located on the island of Luzon (Metro Manila, Clark, Subic, and a fourth cluster consisting of standalone venues). However, problems and controversies continue to pile up as the date approaches. Ever since the logo of 2019 SEA Games is unveiled by the government, Filipino netizens think that the logo is basic, unoriginal, and 'child-made'; leading to Filipino artists uploading their own logos (which are way better than the official logo). The ₱50 million or $984,000 budget for the cauldron also raised an uproar among the Filipinos, calling it an excess, extravagance and unnecessary, where the budget better be spent to help the country's underlying poverty problems. The lawmaker Franklin Drilon addressed the questionable fund saying, "55 classrooms could have been constructed if not for the abuse of government funds." The controversies don't just stop there. Photos of unfinished game venues circulate around social media sites even days before the official game opening. And as foreign athletes continue to arrive in the country, they've suffered from inconveniences: transportation, accomodations, and even lack of food and 'Halal' food for the athletes. All these controversies bring the Philippines and Filipino pride to shame. This isn't how we would like to show our hospitability. Malacañang Palace and PHISGOC already apologized for the mess and promised a smoother flow of events, but the damage can't be undone. Filipinos are know to be resilient and hospitable, may these unfortunate events don't change how other countries see and respect us. My fellow countrymen ask the same question: what happened to the 6 billion peso allocated funds? I know there are a lot of users here from countries that are 2019 SEA Games participants and I, as a Filipino, personally apologize for the organizer's mistakes, your athletes' inconveniences, and hope that the game events will run smoothly despite the organizer and government's shortcomings.
