The country's national basketball federation has apologized from the fight that broke out between the Philippines and Australia in Monday's FIBA Basketball World Cup qualifying matchup at Philippine Arena. In an apology addressed to Filipino basketball fans and the basketball community, Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas President Al Panlilio said the organization "stands by its conviction that violence has no place in sports." "As hosts, we regret having breached the bounds of traditional Filipino hospitality," the statement read. "As the national team representing the flag and country, we likewise extend our apology to the Filipino people." Earlier, Senator Juan Edgardo "Sonny" Angara, who also chairs the SBP, described the brawl as unfortunate, but said he stands by the Filipino players amid the clash. FIBA has opened up disciplinary proceedings for the two teams after a bench-clearing brawl that led to the ejection of nine Filipino and four Australian players. Basketball Australia had earlier expressed deep regret over the incident.
