One of the reasons I prefer using Android phones over iPhones is because I love how Google handles notifications — it’s more detailed and more interactive than on iOS — and how Android lockscreens have so much more functions.
For example, I’m using the OnePlus 3 right now (great, great phone… I can’t recommend it enough if you’re on the market for a new phone right now) and I love its ambient display function, which displays incoming notifications in the form of a low-power-using black and white screen. This happens even when the phone’s screen is off, and users can choose to interact with, or ignore, these notifications without ever turning on the phone. The OnePlus 3 also flashes time and date (and notifications, if any) in similar low-powered manner when users take it out of their pocket, or flip the phone face up. It’s similar to what can be found on the Nexus 6 and Motorola phones, and they’re all designed with one purpose in mind: to let people get a quick glimpse of crucial info (alerts, notifications, time) without having to press a button and turn on the screen, saving time and battery.

Well, these features are coming to the iPhone this fall. That’s when Apple will release a new version of its mobile software to coincide with the release of the iPhone 7. A developer preview of iOS 10 is available now, and here’s what the new iPhone software will do.

–The iPhone will now wake up from sleep when you pull it out of your pocket, or lift it up from a desk/couch/whatever.
–''Swipe to unlock,'' which has been around since day 1 on the first iPhone, is gone. Instead, you now unlock your phone by pressing the home button and using either fingerprint scanner or PIN input.
–Swiping left on the lockscreen will bring up widgets such as calendar, notes, or weather; while swiping right will bring up the camera.
–Notifications on the lockscreen are now completely interactive, and come in a bigger bubble, displaying more information.
This is a big change for Apple, one that encourages users to look at, and interact with, the lockscreen. Prior to iOS 10, the iPhone’s fingerprint scanner was so fast that some users almost never see the lock screen — by the time you press that home button, your phone is awake and in its home screen.
This is a good thing. Having all your notifications in one shade — and being able to interact with them right there on the spot — is better than iPhone’s old ways of ''oh, here’s a red number bubble in the corner of Facebook, let me click into it to see what that is about.''
iPhone users will probably take a day or two to get used to this new set-up, but for Android users, it’ll be second nature.
