The winners of the 2013 Nobel Prizes collected their $1.2 million awards on Tuesday, 10th of December, ceremonies in Stockholm and Oslo. Here's a quick look at the laureates and their achievements. IN PHYSICS (Photo not found) Francois Englert (Belgium) and Peter Higgs (Britain) "for theoritical discovery of a mechanism that contributes to our understanding of the origin of mass of subatomic particles, and which recently was confirmed through the discovery of the predicted fundamental particle, named Higgs Boson (god particle)". IN CHEMISTRY (Photo not found) Martin Karplus (US-Australia), Michael Levitt (US-Britain) and Arich Warshel (US-Israel) "for computer simulations that enable the closer study of complex reactions like photosynthesis and combustion, and the design of new drugs". IN PHYSIOLOGY OR MEDICINE (Photo not found) James E. Rothman (US), Randy W. Schekman (US) and Thomas C. Sudhof (US) "for ground-breaking research on the human body's complex transport system that makes cells deliver life-saving proteins and other molecules". IN LITERATURE (Photo not found) Alice Munro (Canada) "for her tales of the struggles, loves and tragedies of women in small-town Canada". THE PEACE PRIZE (Photo not found) The UN-based chemical arms watchdog- Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) founded in 1997, "for its extensive efforts to eliminate chemical weapons globally". IN ECONOMIC SCIENCES (Photo not found) US trio Lars Peter Hansen, Eugene Fama and Robert Shiller "for empirical analysis that has improved the forecasting of long term asset prices". The Nobel Prize is a set of annual international awards bestowed in a number of categories by Swedish and Norwegian committees in recognition of cultural and/or scientific advances.
