Devastating typhoon strucks Japan

A powerful tropical cyclone named ''Hagibis'' (or ''speed'' in Filipino language) devastated northern Japan this weekend, and is known to be the most devastating typhoon after Ida, which struck in the year 1958. Kantō Region is the most affected region of Japan. Hagibis unleashed more than three feet of rainfall within 24 hours, which cause widespread flash flooding and river flooding. Its sustained winds at hurricane force also affected downtown Tokyo, where Haneda Airport recorded a gust to 98mph.

On October 2, Hagibis developed from a tropical wave a couple hundred miles northwest Marshall Islands. It travelled westward on October 5 and dramatically intensified afterwards, which brought it to its peak intensity on October 7. The typhoon maintained its intensity for about three days and began to weaken. Even after being weakened, Hagibis made a landfall at Izu Peninsula on October 12 as a Category 2-equivalent typhoon.

Sadly, the number of confirmed deaths climbed to at least 58 persons, according to the Japanese broadcaster NHK. Aside from the widespread damage to household and agriculture, there are also a lot of reported missing person.

All of these intensified typhoon destructions are mainly because of human-caused global warming. As per Washington Post says, ''There is evidence showing tropical cyclones in the Northern Pacific Ocean Basin are reaching their maximum intensities farter north than they used to.'' Some scientists are conducting research in order to do their part in battling climate change. We can also do our part to avoid having similar or even stronger typhoon than ''Hagibis''.
