The sieves of the wisdom of Socrates

Once, a young man sought out the philosopher Socrates to give him information he discovered about a friend of the philosopher. At that moment Socrates was reading and quickly raised his eyes to the lad and then asked:

- What do you wish my young man?

The lad then replied to the philosopher:

- I bring you some information I found out about one of your friends.

With all his wisdom, the philosopher Socrates then said:

- What will you tell me has passed through the three sieves of wisdom?

- Three sieves? - questioned the boy.

So the philosopher explained what the three sieves were (pay attention to what these sieves mean!).

1 Sieve -> TRUTH: ''What do you want to tell me is a fact? If you have only heard of it and if you are unsure of its truthfulness, the information must die here and right now.''

2 Sieve -> GOODNESS: ''If all you want to tell me is true, then you should know if the information is a good thing. What do you want to tell me is a good thing? Constructive? Well-intended? If so, let's move on to the next sieve.''

3 Sieve -> NEED: ''If what you want to tell me is true and good, you should know if it is necessary to speak! You want to tell me? Will it solve any problems? Will it help anything?''

So the boy stopped for a while.

Socrates then said:

- If the information is in agreement with the three sieves of wisdom, you can tell me now! As much as you and I will benefit, but otherwise, bury the subject.

And so, the philosopher Socrates gave another important lesson to all mankind.

Thank you for your attention!
