Realization

l just had a sudden appreciation of life today. I was at McDonald's Mendiola today and ordered a Spicy Chicken Spaghetti with Large Coke and an Apple Pie. Took my tray when my order was completed and looked for a seat. As I was slicing my chicken, I felt that something was missing. Then I noticed that I was given rice instead of spaghetti. I called one of the staff and asked if it would be a hassle for them to correct my order, but he said that it would be quick and would not be a problem.

I now just realized that while I was in a long line earlier waiting for my order, the crew were noticeably busy, hastily pacing back and forth just to complete meals for the never ending line of hungry customers. Staff is asking help from one another, cashiers requesting assistance from the manager, some standing and others half-jogging in that tiny space behind the counter. This may seem like something normal, but you won't immediately think that this is
what they do for hours everyday.

As my (replacement) food was brought to my table, I felt bad for myself. Should I just have ignored the mistake and ate my rice instead? I offered to give a small amount of money to the guy who brought it to me. He politely declined and insisted that its okay. He smiled and said sorry as he walked away.

This was when I felt a sense of contentment. I am blessed with a good life, a supportive family, and surrounded with loved ones who help me in times of need. But what about the staff here at McDonald's? And other mainstream fast food chains? They break their backs and sore their soles everyday just to barely earn the minimum legal pay every month. A good chunk of them would use this money to pay their tuition fees, and some might even be supporting their families while going to college at the same time.

In light of this, please don't be rude to these people. You may take this for granted, but I would humbly ask you that if ever you interact with service crews or retail workers, greet them with a smile before stating your order and wish them a nice day before you leave. You may not know that even this small act of friendliness on your part may be a big gesture enough to brighten these people's day amidst the organized chaos they are working with.

Thanks for reading and I hope your time was well spent.
