Money is anything which is generally accepted for purchase of goods and services. Money could act as a luxury good or necessity good. Money is a fundamental need of every household, firm and government. Without money, one can not meet his or her standard of living irrespective of the changes in the economy. Money is held for different reasons such as speculative motive, transactional motive or even precautionary motive. The Speculative motive is a desire to hold cash in order to exploit any attractive investment opportunity requiring a cash expenditure that might arise e.g. buying shares. The Transactional motive is the desire to hold money for everyday transactions or purchase e.g. paying at a place where only cash is accepted. The precautionary motive is a desire to hold cash in order to be able to deal with any unforeseen contingency. Money functions as a medium of exchange, store of value, unit of account and also standard for deferred payment.
