Hurricanes and Tornadoes

Hurricanes and tornadoes are two of the most violent and devastating types of storms that occur, as many people have had the misfortune to experience. Aside from their very destructive characteristics, hurricanes and tornadoes share a few other similarities. Both of them depend on warm, moist air to start, and both are accompanied by fierce winds, rain or hail, and low air pressure.

While hurricanes and tornadoes do have some things in common, they are two distinct types of storms. Hurricanes begin over water, and tornadoes start over land. A tornado has a shape like an upside-down cone, while a hurricane swirls around a calm center, or an eye, in a doughnut like pattern. Although a hurricane is much larger and lasts longer, a tornado tends to be more treacherous and hits with less warning.

When storm winds start gusting to 74 miles (119 kilometers) per hour, the storm is labeled a hurricane. Hurricanes create a rising wall of water that frequently washes onto beaches, piers, and private property. Called a storm surge, this water can climb as high as 25 feet (8 meters) above sea level. The storm surge is what is responsible for the greatest number of deaths during hurricanes, when many people drown in the roaring waters. In addition to ferocious winds and flooding, hurricanes bring heavy rains and, sometimes, tornadoes.

A tornado also known as a twister-is distinguished by spinning, funnel-shaped clouds movig along the ground, and winds up to 310 miles (499 kilometers) per hour. Anything that stands in its path trees, cars, buildings is in danger of being completely destroyed.
