I love music in all its forms and I like making lists. So here are my top 5 music albums of all time (so far). 5. Daft Punk - Random Access Memories A love letter to disco music. A work of huge magnitude by this French electronic duo features vibrant live sound so uncharacteristic of the band's previous works and a bunch of renowned performers featuring on many tracks, from Julian Casablancas and Pharrell Williams to the legendary Giorgio Moroder. The album succeeds as both the collection of hit singles (Get Lucky, Lose Yourself to Dance) and as a concept album with grandiose tracks like Touch or Giorgio by Moroder. So if you are in any way a fan of disco, 80s and 70s - this album will make you squeak with joy. Otherwise it's just a great collection of fun to listen to music. Fav. Tracks: Giorgio by Moroder, Instant Crush Least fav. Tracks: Beyond, Motherboard 4. Portishead - Third It's a hard choice between Dummy and Third, the former being the band's first album and the latter, well, the third. However, I have to go with Third simply for it's novelty. Here Portishead move away from trip-hop and into more experimental sound. Here they sample old movies (like John Carpenter's ones), old synthesizer sound and what not. The sound is often minimalistic and sometimes the band just goes flat out crazy and chaotic like on Magic Doors and it still works perfectly. Beth Gibbons' vocals are as haunting and beautiful as ever. I find the whole album to be amazingly beautiful, eclectic but not so experimental as to make it unlistenable. It just strikes a perfect balance. Fav. Tracks: Nylon Smile, We Carry On Least fav. Track: Small 3. Casiotone for the Painfully Alone - Etiquette This one I would guess not many people have heard of. Owen Ashworth, the single man behind CFTPA released 5 studio albums, Etiquette being the fourth. Musically, it's different from his previous works because here Owen allows himself more freedom from the self-imposed restrictions of low-fi synthesizer chaos of previous albums. The music is still quite minimalistic, quite low-fi but sounds more organic and less forced and, in my opinion, complements Owen's very personal, very intimate lyrics and delivery much better. CFTPA's music is sad, the stories told in his songs are small stories of relationships and friendships. All in all it's really emotional music for when you feel just a little blue. Fav. Tracks: Nashville Parthenon, Cold White Christmas, Young Shields Least fav. Track: Scattered Pearls 2. Pornophonique - 8-bit Lagerfeuer This German electronic music duo mix sounds from Game Boy console and Commodore-64 computer with electric and acoustic guitars. The music isn't that deep or even original, but I think it hits the bullseye in the main criteria for a good album: it's great fun to listen to, on repeat. They sing about things related to video games (Space Invaders), Sci-fi (Sad robot), or even relationships (1/2 Player Game). It's pure rock'n'roll fun with a mix of chiptune to spice it up. Highly recommended for any rock music fan, you won't be disappointed. Fav. Tracks: Game Over, Take me to the Bonus Level because I Need an Extra Life, Sad Robot Least fav Track: Lemmings in Love. 1. Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane over the Sea This band is simply legendary and I don't think I'm being original when putting this album on the number 1 spot in my all-time favorites. There isn't really that much to say: simple guitar chords, Jeff Mangum's strong voice capable of great range and emotion and his elusively poetic but heart-hitting lyrics really make this album a masterpiece of indie music. It's a perfect bland of poetry and music, which probably will take you some time to get into, but once you do, you will, I'm sure, love this album as much as I do. There is nothing else I can say to do this music justice, you just have to hear it. Fav. Tracks: Two-Headed Boy pt.1, Ghost, Comely Least fav. Track: Communist daughter
